Mike Sobe 2009 Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween Safety Tips

A few safety tips from Mike Sobe that can protect children who plan to go trick-or-treating this Halloween.

Treats: Warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.

Flame Resistant Costumes: When purchasing a costume, masks, beards, and wigs, look for the label Flame Resistant. Although this label does not mean these items won't catch fire, it does indicate the items will resist burning and should extinguish quickly once removed from the ignition source. To minimize the risk of contact with candles or other sources of ignition, avoid costumes made with flimsy materials and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts.

Costume Designs: Purchase or make costumes that are light and bright enough to be clearly visible to motorists.

For greater visibility during dusk and darkness, decorate or trim costumes with reflective tape that will glow in the beam of a car's headlights. Bags or sacks should also be light colored or decorated with reflective tape. Reflective tape is usually available in hardware, bicycle, and sporting goods stores.
To easily see and be seen, children should also carry flashlights.
Costumes should be short enough to prevent children from tripping and falling.
Children should wear well-fitting, sturdy shoes . Mother' s high heels are not a good idea for safe walking.
Hats and scarfs should be tied securely to prevent them from slipping over children's eyes.
Apply a natural mask of cosmetics rather than have a child wear a loose-fitting mask that might restrict breathing or obscure vision. If a mask is used, however, make sure it fits securely and has eyeholes large enough to allow full vision.
Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be of soft and flexible material.
Pedestrian Safety: Young children should always be accompanied by an adult or an older, responsible child. All children should WALK, not run from house to house and use the sidewalk if available, rather than walk in the street. Children should be cautioned against running out from between parked cars, or across lawns and yards where ornaments, furniture, or clotheslines present dangers.

Choosing Safe Houses: Children should go only to homes where the residents are known and have outside lights on as a sign of welcome.

Children should not enter homes or apartments unless they are accompanied by an adult.
People expecting trick-or-treaters should remove anything that could be an obstacle from lawns, steps and porches. Candlelit jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame. Indoor jack-o'-lanterns should be kept away from curtains, decorations, and other furnishings that could be ignited.

Note: Watch for sex offenders. Sex offenders still being supervised by the Department of Parole and Probation are not allowed to decorate their homes or hand out candy to children for Halloween. Police officers, as well as parole and probation officers, go out every year to make sure this doesn't happen.

Officers can arrest offenders who are breaking the rules and remind others that they should not leave their light on or do anything that may invite children to their homes on Saturday. Heres a link you can check out to avoid going to a sex offender home Family Watch Dog

Male Breast Cancer Self Exam

As you all know this month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and doing my research sadly a high number of men (including myself) doesn't self exam for breast cancer. Did you know for men only 1 in 1,000 dies from breast cancer.

THIS TELL YOU MEN CAN DIE FROM BREAST CANCER TOO NOT JUST WOMEN....

Which type of men are most at risk?
Over 65
African-American
Those exposed to radiation therapy
Those with family history of breast cancer

All of us men are at risk and should start doing breast self exams.By doing this we can check for unusual lumps beneath the nipple. Now if you find a unusual lump then you may want to contact your Doctor.

Breast self-examination is one of the most important tools you have for early detection of breast cancer. Early detection and treatment of any cancer is the key to saving your life. Consider doing a monthly self-exam and mark the date in your calendar. Below is the steps on doing a self exam:

1.Start in Your Bath or Shower
Run a warm shower or bath. Use soap or bath gel to create a soapy, slippery layer over your breast area. Well-soaped skin will be easier to examine, as it allows your fingers to slide along your skin without rubbing.

2.Check Your Breast Texture
Raise your left arm over your head, and if possible, put your left hand on the back of your head. On your right hand, put your index finger, middle finger, and ring finger together as a group. You will use these three fingers to check your left breast. Check the texture of your left breast by starting at the outer edge. Place your three fingers flat onto your skin, press down and move in small circles. Repeat this all around your breast. Don't rush.

3.Check Your Nipple
Check your nipple by gently squeezing it between your index and ring fingers. Look for any discharge, puckering, or retraction (pulling inward).

4.Check Both Sides
Reverse your hands and check your right breast, using the same methods as Steps 3 and 4. Both breasts must be checked.

5.Visual Examination
Rinse yourself off and dry with a towel. Stand before a mirror which is large enough for you to see both breasts. Take note of any asymmetry and skin changes (rash, puckers, dimples).

6.How to Handle a Lump
Remember that most lumps in male breasts are due to gynecomastia, which is a benign condition. In addition, 80% of all breast lumps are not cancerous. But if you do feel any change in your breasts that causes concern, see your doctor for a clinical breast exam.

NBC BUMPED GLEE FROM THE MACY'S THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE

Wow this sucks, E! ONLINE sources confirm that the cast of Fox's hit series Glee will not take part in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade next month on NBC.

It look like both NBC and FOX have talks about the Glee stars appearing and performing in the parade but of course NBC had cold feet and decided to say no. Macy's did make a offer to the Glee cast, but never told NBC first. I feel if Macy's wanted them in the parade NBC should have honor this request. This probably would of give NBC Thanksgiving coverage of the parade a boost in there ratings, because you'll have alot for teens, fans of Glee and the faithful FOX viewers watching.

NBC did point out that the network never promotes castmembers from competing programming, and that the Idol singers performed only after they had moved on from the Fox reality series to become recording artists. In the past 6 years FOX stars such as FOX American Idols stars have perform in the parade..FOX reality is still part of the FOX network...SO WHY WAS GLEE LEFT OUT??

I hope NBC change their minds.

Poll: Do you think @Schwarzenegger did a great thing by giving In to Gay Rights?

Schwarzenegger Signs 2 Gay Rights Bills

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last night, two gay rights ones were authored by San Francisco's Senator Mark Leno. One names May 22nd as Harvey Milk Day and the bill recognizes same-sex marriages from other states by providing "the same legal protections that would otherwise be available to couples that enter into civil unions or domestic partnerships out-of-state," according to the bill. This is a huge start of human rights for the GLBT communities and the bill will honor the will of the people around the world that enacting prop 8 while providing important protections to those unions legally entered into in other states.

This have been a great year around the country for GLBT'S !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We the people who support obama newsletter 10/09/09

POOR BUSH.. With Obama winning the Nobel peace prize this would be a slap at president bush ..while some people are upset about the win i am going to celebrate .this country is dividing again . what would people say if john McCain won the prize today if he was president..honesty this shows America isn't ready for an African American being president. i study political stuff and last time i remember when people talked down on bush they were put in handcuffs.Obama can be speaking at a rally and people out are protesting with handguns..Obama and secret service never made a huge issue out of it.....but the only thing i am puzzle about is the prize money why is it going to charity and not to the u.s. people or education .
